A well-established, Boston-based heavy civil contractor is seeking an experienced Senior Superintendent to lead field operations on complex infrastructure projects throughout the Greater Boston and New England markets.
This is a senior field leadership position suited to someone with a strong background in heavy civil construction, public works, highways, bridges, transit, utilities, energy infrastructure, sitework, and complex urban construction environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving production, managing crews and subcontractors, maintaining a safe and efficient jobsite, and ensuring projects are delivered to the highest standards of quality, schedule, and cost performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day field operations across heavy civil and infrastructure projects.
- Direct union crews, foremen, subcontractors, suppliers, and field staff to ensure work is executed safely and efficiently.
- Drive production in the field while maintaining quality, safety, and schedule expectations.
- Develop, manage, and communicate short-term lookahead schedules, sequencing plans, manpower needs, equipment needs, and logistics plans.
- Coordinate work involving excavation, utilities, roadway reconstruction, bridges, transit infrastructure, energy networks, concrete, drainage, paving, and site development.
- Maintain a strong understanding of contract drawings, specifications, work plans, RFIs, submittals, and project requirements.
- Work closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, General Superintendents, owners, inspectors, public agencies, and design teams.
- Manage subcontractor performance, field coordination, deliveries, materials, equipment, and daily work activities.
- Oversee jobsite safety programmes and ensure strict compliance with OSHA, company policies, owner requirements, and site-specific safety plans.
- Monitor field productivity, labour usage, equipment utilization, and cost performance.
- Assist with cost control, change order identification, field documentation, and production tracking.
- Support survey/layout coordination and ensure work is installed accurately and in accordance with project requirements.
- Proactively identify field issues, constructability challenges, schedule impacts, and risk items.
- Lead daily huddles, foreman meetings, subcontractor coordination meetings, and safety meetings.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, manpower logs, equipment logs, progress photos, and jobsite documentation.
- Build strong working relationships with unions, agencies, owners, subcontractors, and internal project teams.
- Mentor junior superintendents, foremen, engineers, and field staff.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and high-quality field execution.
Required Experience
- 10+ years of construction field experience, with a strong background in heavy civil or infrastructure construction.
- Proven experience as a Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, Area Superintendent, or General Superintendent on complex civil projects.
- Experience managing self-perform crews, subcontractors, field engineers, suppliers, and union labour.
- Strong knowledge of heavy civil scopes such as utilities, earthwork, concrete, roadways, bridges, transit, drainage, paving, or energy infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to manage production, schedule, cost, safety, and quality in a fast-paced field environment.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, work plans, and contract documents.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Experience working with public agencies, inspectors, municipalities, DOTs, transit authorities, or utility providers is highly preferred.
- OSHA 30 preferred.
- Valid driver’s licence required.
Preferred Background
- Experience delivering work in dense urban environments, active roadways, airports, rail/transit corridors, utility corridors, or live infrastructure settings.
- Background working for a self-performing heavy civil contractor.
- Experience with design-build, accelerated schedules, night work, shutdowns, tie-ins, and phased construction.
- Familiarity with Massachusetts and New England public infrastructure projects.
- Strong labour relations experience and comfort working with union craft labour.
